Submission Guidelines

1. Scope of the Journal
ALEA — Revue Internationale d'Art et de Recherche welcomes original scholarly contributions from researchers, practitioners, and university students across all university-level disciplines in art and design. The journal's scope includes, but is not limited to:

Fine Arts & Theory

• Art theory and aesthetics

• Contemporary art practice and praxis

• Visual culture studies

• History of art (modern and contemporary)

• Curatorial studies and exhibition history

• East–West comparative art studies

Design

• Visual communication and graphic design

• Industrial and product design

• Fashion and textile design

• Interior, spatial, and architectural design

• Interaction, digital, and service design

• Craft and material culture studies

Music

• Musicology and ethnomusicology

• Music composition and performance research

• Music theory and analysis

• Sound studies and sonic arts

Performing Arts

• Theatre and drama studies

• Dance studies and choreographic research

• Performance studies and interdisciplinary performance

• Opera and music theatre

Film & Media

• Film studies and cinema history

• Photography, media, and image theory

• Animation and moving-image arts

• Documentary and screen culture studies

Interdisciplinary and practice-based research (practice-as-research) bridging any of the above fields is particularly encouraged.

2. Article Format
ALEA publishes short scholarly papers of 2,000–4,000 words (excluding abstract, references, and captions), with a maximum of eight figures or images. Concise research notes, exhibition reviews, and practice-based reflections within this length are welcome.

3. Languages and Translation Policy
ALEA is a bilingual journal. All accepted papers are published in both French and English.

• Preferred submission languages: English or Chinese. Papers submitted in English or Chinese are translated into French by the journal's editorial translation service (see Author Fees).

• Authors may alternatively submit directly in French, accompanied by a complete English version.

• An English abstract of 150–200 words is mandatory for all submissions. The French abstract is prepared by the editorial team.

• Final bilingual versions are prepared and approved by the editorial team prior to publication.
   

4. Manuscript Requirements

• Papers must be original, unpublished work not under consideration elsewhere.

• Submissions are prepared for double-blind review: the manuscript file must contain no author names, affiliations, or self-identifying references. Author details are provided separately on a cover page.

• An English abstract (150–200 words) and five to eight keywords must accompany the paper.

• Page format (French academic convention): A4, Times New Roman 12 pt, 1.5 line spacing, 2.5 cm margins on all sides, pages numbered.

• Citation style (French academic convention): references are given in footnotes (notes de bas de page) with a full bibliography at the end, following the French norm NF ISO 690. In-text author–date citation (APA style) is not used.
  Footnote example: Prénom Nom, Titre de l'ouvrage, Ville, Éditeur, année, p. 00.

• French typographic conventions (« guillemets », punctuation spacing) are applied by the editorial team during production; authors submitting in English or Chinese need not apply them.

• Manuscripts are submitted as an editable text document (.docx or .odt). Final accepted versions may be requested in additional formats for production.
   

5. Figures and Images

• Maximum eight figures per paper.

• Accepted formats: JPEG, TIFF, or PNG; minimum resolution 300 dpi (at least 1,500 px on the shorter side).

• Figures are submitted as separate files, named sequentially (Fig_01, Fig_02 …), with placement marked in the text ([Insert Fig. 1]).

• Every figure requires a full caption and source credit: artist/author, title, year, medium, dimensions, collection or location, photo credit.

• Authors are responsible for securing reproduction rights for all images prior to submission; written permission may be requested by the editorial team.

• Screenshots, low-resolution web images, and images with embedded watermarks are not accepted.
   

6. Submission Process

2. Editorial pre-screening (1–2 weeks): scope and format check

3. Double-blind peer review (4–6 weeks): two anonymous reviewers

4. Editorial decision: Accept / Revise & Resubmit / Reject

5. Translation and bilingual production (French–English)

6. Publication in the next annual issue
    

7. Funding and Author Fees
ALEA — Revue Internationale d'Art et de Recherche is an independently funded journal. Any applicable author contribution toward editorial production and French translation services is communicated directly to authors upon acceptance of a manuscript.
Editorial Board members and invited contributors are exempt from any author fees.
 
8. Editorial Standards
ALEA maintains rigorous editorial standards through double-blind peer review; not all submissions can be accepted for publication.
 
9. Open Access Policy
All accepted articles are published under the Creative Commons CC BY-NC 4.0 license. Authors retain copyright; ALEA holds first publication rights. First publication rights apply to both language versions (French and English).
