ALINE FALCO

Board of Directors/ University Lecturer

Lecturer at the Université Populaire Européenne, teaching traditional decorative techniques Education & Specialization: * Majored in Fine Arts and Art History * Specialized in traditional hand-made book decoration (Illumination) Professional Career: * Lecturer at the Université Populaire Européenne, teaching traditional decorative techniques * Transitioned to the art of illumination in 2002 * Established her own studio in Strasbourg in 2004 Artistic Practice: * Creates unique illuminated works, decorative panels, and symbolic art pieces * Combines ancestral techniques with modern design sensibilities * Draws inspiration from Art Nouveau and diverse cultural traditions Techniques & Materials: * Works with parchment, natural pigments, and 24K gold leaf * Expert in raised gilding and meticulous brush techniques Memberships & Recognition: * Official member of Ateliers d’Art de France * Official member of FREMAA (Fédération des Métiers d’Art d’Alsace) since 2010 Exhibitions & Public Presence: * Exhibited at Parc Expo Strasbourg and Métiers d'Art d'Andlau * Regularly participates in cultural fairs and artisanal salons Publications: * Author of Techniques de l’enluminure, published by Ulysse Éditions in 2007 International Influences: * Inspired by travels to Japan, India, Mexico, Australia, Morocco, and beyond "For more than 18 years, I’ve designed my creations like precious and treasured jewels the future owner will be able to make his own. I love working by collection, to be able to delve into each thematic and explore every possibility. It is also an efficient means to propose a wide range of pieces.  The contemporaneity is not only in the blueprint but can be figurative and always undertaken. The graphics become originals in my way to compose or to gather different periods or cultures. I love to connect different cultures and to find the harmony illustrating the common features between civilizations. On the same creation you can find some Indian fabric patterns, some Art Nouveau ironworks, some Arabic carved wood design or some Viking jewelry! There is no frontier any more, which is my ideal vision of the world! My approach is very focused on symbolism. I take care to choose meaningful texts and specific characters' representations. I’m familiar with oppositions such as contradictions between two periods, two techniques, two symbolism, two interpretations… in complete agreement with a personal duality. Sometimes some words emphasize an idea but calligraphy is usually used as an ornamentation or a graphic design amongst unstructured elements. Through constant questioning of the illumination form, I consider the traditional technique essential to be different from painting or illustration, which are the successors of this Art. But I want to prove you can challenge some of the codes while being faithful to the philosophy of this Art: precision, repetition of forms, friezes and its meditative aspect."

These materials invite viewers to explore the work under varied spectrums of light, where hidden details and visual “Easter eggs” emerge—offering a dynamic experience that evolves over time. Through this multidimensional approach, the works express narratives and temporal shifts, reflecting the tension and harmony between the external and internal worlds, body and soul, and the layered complexities of daily life. The viewer is invited to observe from multiple perspectives to uncover the full picture.

He has independently advocated for re-centering Taiwan’s art on its native land—highlighting the absence of a pigment-making tradition over the past 400 years of Han settlement. With a commitment to sustainability, he personally cultivates and gathers natural materials to produce pigments, establishing a local natural pigment database and applying it to both art and daily life. This long-term initiative, now spanning over 12 years, aims to root a new cultural identity through earth-based, natural-materials art in Taiwan.
