Boris Kochan (1962) designs: companies, organizations, relationships, and contexts – as an entrepreneur, designer, author, as a curator, moderator, and consultant. After his layout and typography training at the Sternagel graphic studio, he first gained journalistic professional experience in an editorial office of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, followed by technical experience at the Lothar Wolf typesetting studio and – in lithography and screen printing – at the Jürgen Höflich printing workshop. While still a student in 1981, he founded a graphic and text office with friends, expanding it two years later to include typesetting and lithography, in 1989 to include Zelig-Druck, and in 1995 to include the interactive unit Peppermind. Today, with around 40 individuals in Munich and a branch in Berlin, Kochan & Partner is one of the 15 largest owner-managed CD/CI agencies in Germany as a branding and design agency. At the turn of 2022/2023, Boris Kochan stepped down from management but remains associated with the company as majority shareholder and Senior Advisor.
Boris Kochan curates and moderates lecture series, conferences, and panel discussions, gives lectures worldwide, and leads workshops on brand development, communication, and design policy. As President of the international project for non-Latin scripts and typefaces, GRANSHAN, he is responsible for type design and typography competitions, as well as conferences, exhibitions, and publications. From 2011 to 2020, he organized Europe's largest editorial design conference, EDCH (formerly QVED). After seven years as Chairman of the Typographic Society Munich (tgm), he became the first President of the newly formed umbrella organization of German design organizations, Deutscher Designtag (DT), in April 2016. He represents this organization as spokesperson for the Design Section and, since March 2019, as Vice President of the German Cultural Council (Deutscher Kulturrat), the peak association of German art, culture, media, and creative associations.
