From Glastonbury to SXSW and NXNE: a voice of Taiwan fusing classical, electronic and exotic ethnic timbres
[Taipei] In Episode 11 of The Great Artist, the podcast presented by DE Global Art Agency, the music group April Red, hailing from Taiwan, joins the programme. In this episode, this electronic duo — who have repeatedly graced international stages — share their distinctive musical philosophy and the creative story behind their latest single, "Thinking of Nothing".
April Red is composed of DJ Code Wu, one of Taiwan's foremost electronic music producers, and the captivating vocalist and singer-songwriter Shaoshi. Their musical style fuses classical and avant-garde elements, flowing as though in a trance, sketching romantic vistas like scenes from a picture. Shaoshi's voice is crystalline, clear and moving, while Code Wu's arrangements are richly layered and suffused with grace. Since releasing their eponymous debut EP in 2013, the two have continued to radiate their singular musical charm upon stages the world over.
April Red's music not only blends ambient, house, chill-out and electronic styles, but also deftly incorporates Chinese and exotic ethnic timbres, so that the listener seems immersed in a confluence of nature and culture. This sonic experiment, crossing both geography and genre, lends their work a high degree of international distinctiveness. In this interview, they share the creative journey of their latest single, "Thinking of Nothing", and unveil for the first time its 528Hz Remix — 528Hz is regarded in the field of sound healing as a frequency bearing restorative and relaxing energy, echoing the healing and harmony they have always pursued.
April Red's experience on the international stage is especially striking. Code Wu was the first ethnic Chinese DJ to perform on the stage of Britain's Glastonbury Festival — Glastonbury is one of the largest music festivals in the world, and to appear upon its stage is a high affirmation of a musician's calibre. Moreover, the duo have been invited to perform at major international festivals such as ADE in the Netherlands, SXSW in the United States and NXNE in Canada, with appearances spanning the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States, Dubai, Canada, Hong Kong and Malaysia. In 2018, they were principal performing guests at Taipei Fashion Week; in 2019, they took to the stage of NXNE, Canada's largest music festival, further consolidating their place on the global musical map.
This episode is not merely a sharing about music, but a practical lesson in how Chinese musicians can make their way onto the international stage. Through their own experience, April Red show that only by possessing both a profound musical grounding and a broad international vision can one sing one's own distinctive voice upon the fiercely competitive world stage.
April Red's journey from Taiwan to the world is a vivid exemplar of the international career that The Great Artist emphasises — rooted in solid creative ability, aspiring towards the international stage, letting the voice of Taiwan be heard by the world.
The Great Artist EP11 is now available on Apple Podcasts, SoundOn and other platforms, with a running time of approximately 35 minutes. Listeners are warmly invited to experience the soul-stirring sonic world of April Red.
