A Conceptual-Art Doctoral Candidate Interrogating Time, Memory, and Cosmic Poetics Through Abstract Painting
[Taipei] On The Great Artist Podcast (EP35) by DE Global Art Agency, the guest is Hsu Nai-wen, a Europe-based abstract painter and doctoral candidate in conceptual art. In this episode hosted by Lin Heng-hsing, Hsu Nai-wen shares her creative journey from London to Paris, and how she has forged a path of her own along the twin tracks of scholarship and art.
Hsu Nai-wen is a Europe-based abstract painter, currently a doctoral candidate in conceptual art. Her practice spans painting, photography, and conceptual art; her works do not dwell on representing the external world, but turn instead toward a profound distillation of inner perception and states of mind. Through the flow of colour, the rhythm of the brushstroke, and the layered construction of space, she lays out, between consciousness and the subconscious, a visual field poised between memory and emotion. Her abstract painting is therefore not merely an experiment in form, but a philosophical articulation of the relationship between the self and the world.
Hsu Nai-wen's academic background has laid a profound foundation for her practice. She graduated from Goldsmiths College in London, majoring in conceptual art and the urban culture of photography — one of the renowned cradles of the contemporary art world, of which the celebrated contemporary artist Damien Hirst is an alumnus. After more than a decade of training in Europe, she has continued to deepen her understanding of "time and space" and her inquiry into "cosmic poetics," so that her abstract art carries a substantial foundation of academic research.
In 2026, Hsu Nai-wen's practice received significant recognition. She was selected for the IAP International Art Exhibition at the Louvre (Carrousel du Louvre) and was awarded the Silver Prize for Best Photography in the United Kingdom — two international honours that mark her arrival at a mature stage of creation. From the conceptual-art scene of London into the Louvre of Paris, Hsu Nai-wen's artistic path is, step by step, blossoming upon the international stage.
In this episode, host Lin Heng-hsing and Hsu Nai-wen delve together into many moving topics: the turning point that first led her onto the creative path, the impact of Goldsmiths' conceptual-art training upon her, how abstract painting can carry the weight of academic research, her true state of mind upon selection for the Louvre, and why an international vision is so crucial for the contemporary artist. She also offers sincere reminders and advice to young creators just setting out today.
From the conceptual-art scene of London into the Louvre of Paris — in this episode, what we hear is not merely one person's creative journey, but how an international creator forges a path of her own along the twin tracks of scholarship and art. This is precisely the perfect embodiment of the academic legitimacy and international careers that The Great Artist advocates.
The Great Artist EP35 is now available on Apple Podcasts, SoundOn and other platforms, with a running time of approximately 84 minutes. We invite you to listen and join Hsu Nai-wen in a profound dialogue spanning scholarship and art.
